Story1904

Before the wall socket, power came from the lamp

There is a strange interval in the history of electricity when houses were wired for light and nothing else. The current arrived overhead, at the ceiling, ending in a screw socket meant for a bulb, and that was the only place power came out. If you wanted to run an early iron or a toaster or a fan, there was no outlet in the wall to plug it into. You unscrewed the light bulb, screwed your appliance's fitting into the empty socket instead, and worked in the dark while your toast browned.

The fix came in 1904 from an inventor named Harvey Hubbell, who devised a separable attachment plug: a connector that could be joined and parted at will, freeing an appliance from being permanently wired in. His pattern used two flat blades, a spare and practical shape with no ceremony to it, and it broke the odd dependence on the lamp socket by giving electricity its own dedicated way in and out. Power stopped being a thing you borrowed from the lighting and became something you could simply plug into.

That flat two-blade pattern did not stay a curiosity. It is the direct ancestor of the Type A plug that still powers most of North America and Japan today, the same spare geometry carried forward across more than a century. Every time one of those flat plugs slides into a wall, it is repeating a small act of independence that began when someone decided appliances deserved better than to take turns with a light bulb. The wall socket, so ordinary now that it is invisible, was once a genuine invention, and the plug that fits it remembers the moment power finally came down from the ceiling.
