What 432 Hz actually is

Few numbers in music attract as much mythology as 432 Hz. Modern advocates attribute ancient wisdom or healing significance to it, describing a tuning supposedly closer to nature or the cosmos. The difficulty is simple to state: there is no acoustic or historical evidence for any of it. The claims are compelling as stories and empty as facts. What 432 actually is turns out to be modest and knowable. It sits about 32 cents flat of 440, a figure you can work out directly.

The interval measures 1200 times the base-two logarithm of 440 divided by 432, which comes to roughly 31.8 cents, and since a semitone spans 100 cents, that places 432 well under a third of a semitone below standard pitch. It is a small, real interval, the kind you can genuinely hear as slightly lower when you compare the two side by side, and no more mysterious than that. The historical connection often cited is the composer Verdi, and here too the truth is quieter than the legend. Verdi did campaign to lower pitch in Italy, pushing toward the lower French standard specifically to spare singers the strain of ever-rising tuning.

That much is real. But the specific attribution of 432 to him is contested, a modern retelling that reads a precise number back into a broader cause he actually championed. The honest conclusion is almost anticlimactic, and better for it. 432 Hz sounds different from 440 for the plainest possible reason: because it is different, a touch lower, exactly as the arithmetic predicts. No ancient secret is required to explain a small interval you can measure with a logarithm and hear with your own ears.
